1. What was Miller's point in writing The Crucible?
http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Lab/4191/MILLER/millers.html#Who_was_Arthur_Millerhttp://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/salem/SAL_CRU.HTM
The sites tell how Miller wanted prove to people how McCarthyism was the same as hunting witches.
I think he was trying to show people how bad McCarthyism was. He wanted show people how no matter what you said to defend yourself it could be used against you. He was trying to make people realize that MaCarthyism was just as bad as the witch trials in Salem. I think he did prove to many people MaCarhyism was the same as hunting witches.

2. How are McCarthyism, the Red Scare, Arthur Miller and The Crucible interrelated?
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USAmccarthyism.htmThe sites talks about McCarthyism and the Red Scare.
The Crucible, McCarthyism, and the Red Scare are all related because they all deal with persecuting people. They all kill and imprison people who don't believe exactly what they believe. They don't give the accused a chance to defend themselves. They also use everything the accused say against them.
3.Document other times in American history when 'witch hunts' were conducted and discuss the outcomes of the Salem witch hunt and the other witch hunts you find. What do they all have in common?

This site tells how the Japanese were treated and why during World War II.
The Japanese were forced to go to camps during World War II. The camps were over cowed and had poor living conditions. Later some of the people could leave the camp if they enlisted in the army. In the end many Japanese Americans renounced their citizenship.
http://www.indians.org/articles/indian-reservations.htmlThis site tells about the Indians and reservations.
The first settlers tried to convert the Indians to Christianity. Later the Indians were forced to live on reservations. They were killed if they would not move to the reservations. Some of the new laws prohibited Indians from hunting. Many of them didn't know how to farm and didn't want to learn so they died of starvation.
The Indian and Japanese witch hunts forced people to move. All witch hunts are caused when people try to covert people of a different culture. The government tries to protect people during witch hunts, but ends up killing innocent people. The outcome of any witch hunt is people dieing for no reason.

Beth...Good Job! You might want to go through and edit your description. There were a few missed words and other little things like that.
Beth...was the 'witch hunt' of the Japanese in the United States? Mr. Hansen said that all the 'witch hunts' we do must have taken place in the United States.
Hey Beth..the first website that you listed doesn't show up at school so you might want to change that!..good summerizations of the website you have a lot of sites to choose from.
Beth, the first site wouldn't come up. The second site you have for why Arthur Miller wrote the Crucible talks about the movie not really why he wrote it. The second site you have for McCarthyism explains that alot. I like the site about the Indians, I never thought about them as being 'hunted'. Good Job.
1. The geocities site does not open at school, but I have that site also...it is a very descriptive site. Nice choice. Your second link is pointless, I saw it on someone else's blog too, but it only talks about the play, it doesn't describe. Being blunt of course. :]
2. Your first site is way too long to search through - I've also seen that on others' blog. The second link is great, I like the description they give.
3. Great thinking on these! I didn't think of the Indians until I saw this on your page, the Japanese was also a great choice. Good thinking!
1.) I see how Miller wanted to portray to the American public the similarities between his play about the Salem Witch Trials and about McCarthy. He wrote this play because as he was learning about the Salem Trials, he realized how much they had in common with the Communists in the fifties. He wanted to express his views on the situation indirectly, trying not to cause a lot of uproar.
2.) In all three of these situations, people are destroyed by the government (i.e. when they were blacklisted) whether they be accused of being witches or Communists. You're right when you say that innocent people had no chance when the government called them out--they had too much power.
3.) The Native American witch hunt is a great American example. The Europeans forced the Indians to believe in their beliefs, and if they didn't they persecuted them. Again, another example of when people get too much power, they think they can overrule anyone that is different--they can't just let them be.
Hey Beth great sites your geocites wouldn't come up for me but you had very informal sites otherwise.
Your first site for the third question wouldn't work either but the other site about the native americans was good. You might want to find a little more information about the third question.
The sites for your second question showed a lot of different people being involved than I had known of. Great job though, I would keep building on your work.
1.Your sites gave enough information of Miller and his views, that it made it very easy to formulate an opinion on why he wrote the play.
2.Your second site gave plenty of information on McCarthyism but there could be a little more of a comparison.
3.I like the outlook on the Native Americans being forced to reservations as a witch hunt. I never looked at it that way.
Great websites. I like them to be nice and precise like that. The first one was really informative on the background of the play and the second was a good summary of McCarthyism. I don't feel that the Native Americans are being hunted. Native Americans have more rights that I do, and just because I'm a white male, it's okay. Placing minorities on a pedistal is a dangerous thing, as is trying to repay damages done centuries ago. If you're going to be an American, be one. Country above race.
Let me clarify. Indians were witch hunted many years ago. But i don't feel that they are as persecuted as some want us to believe in today's society.
Hey Beth your secound website about why Arthur Miller wrote the Crucible is more about the movie not really describing why he wrote it. But its a still a usefull website.
your secound link for McCarthyism is really good, gives good information.
The last website is really good its interesting to see Indian witch hunts and learn about them it was a great website.
Good job!
Beth...I now got your first website to work, it is a good site and provides alot of information. I also really liked the last website you have listed about Indians and how they were hunted, like as in a "witch hunt." Good Job.
I also really liked what you said about each website in your summerizations it helped me to understand McCarthyism much better.
The last description of the last website is a little choppy. You might want to rephrase it so it is a little easier to read.
Hey Beth - i couldn't open the geocites, but the second one was really neat. it helped me to understand the crucible better.
Thanks for giving such a great summary. It helped me to understand the websites as i was reading through them.
Good example with the Indian website. You really spent alot of time on this.
1. I really liked the geocities website...it is the first time I have actually been able to access it. The information about Miller and his political views is really relevant, and it focused specifically on the question you're trying to answer. The second site is clear; I found sites about the actual productions of the play useful as well.
2.The third site had a little too much info. for me. I found it a little overwhelming and didn't even find where it applied to the crucible. The fourth site really depicted how scary the red scare really was for people.
3. The last two websites were well-chosen. The examples are good, and the Indians are an especially good instance since we know more about that witch hunt.
Good Job!
Beth your geocites page doesnt work on the first one, but the second page was very good.
Beth for the second question your first website was a little bit too long. I didnt feel like reading it, but the second one was a good site and realy answered the question well.
I liked how you gave two examples of this question. Both are very true to being a witch hunt.
1. Couldn't get into the first site.
2. The site about the Japanese was good. I didn't know that the Japanese were treated that way and it was very informative.
3. I agree with the Native Americans being treated as witches. Good Job.
1. For some reason I can't open your first site.
2. I like your second sites because they proved a point that the government had to much power. The people became hopeless and eventually just gave in to the governments power. Good example.
3. Good example of the Native Americans. The government tried everything in their power to control the Indians. I don't think its right that the government kicked Indians off the land when they were there in the first place. I guess we probably wouldn't be living where we are today though. GOOD JOB!
Hey beth. Your geocities site doesn't show up at school so yea. Your law.umkc site is rather well. Second question. Your spartacus site is a great information source on the Red Scare. Your essortment site also has good info but is kinda boring to read. Your info about the japanese is good and the indain site is short and gets to the point.
1. All of your hyperlinks work and I like how you say that you think Miller proved to people that McCarthyism was like hunting witches.
2. These sites are good on the information they contain.
3. I like the ways you show 'witch hunting' in America. I have the same site as you for the Japanese during WWII.
Good job Beth...everything looks good. You have some of the same sites that I have, so hopefully they are good. Keep up the good work!
1)You gave long descriptions of the sites so that helped some...but i couldnt access some of them but i my computer is pretty muffed up.
2)Again i couldnt access it but my computer acts up once and while.
3)Well i finally got to one... i never thought of some of your examples of these hunts.
Great job, Beth! You summarized each site well and the sites were very informative. Keep it up!
The witch hunt of the Japenese. Did this happen in the US, because to fit the assignment I think it has to. Otherwise good job.
Great summarizations. They are all clear and easy to understand as well as your sites are too. Good job overall with the assignment. Keep it up!
Good example for another American witch hunt--the Indians being persecuted by settlers. We just finished learning about that in history, how the Indians were killed because they wouldn't convert to Christianity. I really don't know what I would do if I was forced to convert to another religion. Very good job, Beth!
